The league was established in 2004 with the purpose of providing individuals of the Greek Orthodox faith to compete in a Basketball League of their own peers after finishing their years in GOYA. The league was initially founded by Directors Steven Georgalos and George Plevritis along with Steering Committee members Costas Eliades, Steve Fegos, Larry Hatzioannides and Chris Paras. All members of the Steering Committee were heavily involved as coaches, advisors and mentors to their Youth Programs at the time. The league was started with 12 Men's teams represented from St Demetrios of Astoria, St Demetrios of Jamaica, Three Hierarchs of Brooklyn, Holy Cross of Brooklyn, Kimisis of Brooklyn, St Constantine and Helen of Brooklyn, Holy Cross of Whitestone and Zoodoghos Peghe of The Bronx. Many players who participated were thrilled and filled with anticipation to once again play in the confines of the gymnasiums that they once played in. The following year, the GOMBL added a Women's Division which comprised of 7 different teams. The Men's division also ballooned to 20+ teams and saw a new team in St Constantine from Jackson Heights which never participated in the MGOBL.

Our goal has, and always will be, to promote good sportsmanship since we are all part of the same religion and heritage. All rules must be followed to help secure the officials and faciliites in which the league schedules their games. We are more than accomodating to teams that allow us the use of their gymnasium. Each game is proctored by a member of the Board Of Directors and also intervene in the event of a possible situation. We please also ask captains to continuously show good sportsmanship to opponents, team mates and league officials as a way of leading by example.
